Kanta Kochhar, Ph.D.

Researcher/ Writer - ‘The Body Remembers the Mountain’
Choreographer / Director / Curator for “In the Blue Houses Dream the Mountains,” “Towards a Different Earth,” “Weavings,” and “Weathered Theatre”

Dr. Kochhar is an Indian-American and hard-of-hearing choreographer, filmmaker, poet, educator, and Performance Studies scholar. She is the Founding Director of Folded Paper Dance and Theatre Limited (Hong Kong, Seattle, and India) and Co-Director of Wild Studios Consulting & Creative Productions. Her work is committed to developing new transdisciplinary practices for shared futures. Dr. Kochhar has authored numerous works on performance, disability, ecology, and heritage; produced conferences, symposia, interactive installations, and community events; taught a wide range of Interdisciplinary Studies courses; and facilitated workshops and professional development training programs. She has created, choreographed, and directed numerous performances across the US, Europe, and Asia. Her methodology combines ethnography, experimental writing, dance arts, design practices, critical theory, and storytelling. It emphasizes how multisensory approaches can inform accessible cultural heritage practices and arts for all, through both live and virtual platforms. This approach aims to expand capacities to listen to each other and to the earth. Dr. Kochhar was a Fulbright-Nehru Senior Scholar Awardee in 2022–2023 and 2017–2018.

Weavings

The Body Remembers the Mountain Project (BRM, 2023) is an archival, ethnographical, and critical performance study of Kailasodharanham (Lifting Mount Kailash) that examines how the performing body of Kutiyattam engages with the questions of eco-aesthetics. This research, which included a study of Kerala stories about mountains and their communities, resulted In the Blue Houses Dream the Mountains, a live/virtual intercultural bi-lingual theatre work on mountains and climate change and what we were told was the first ever Accessible Theatre Production for live theatre work in Kerala, with interpretation in Indian Sign Language and audio description in Malayalam. This project formed part of Dr. Kanta Kochhar-Lindgren’s Fulbright-Nehru Senior Scholar Research Project (April-December 2023).

Research Collaborator, Kutiyattam Exponent

Kalamandalam Rama Chakyar, from a three-generation Kutiyattam lineage, began training at age nine and later joined Kerala Kalamandalam. He is a renowned exponent, performing all significant roles in Kutiyattam and Chakyar Koothu nationally and internationally since 1970. He has held numerous academic roles and received prestigious awards, including the Central Sangeet Natak Academy Award in 2010.

Kalamandalam Jishnu Prathap is a notable young Kutiyattam artist and a disciple of maestros like Kalamandalam Ramachakyar. He holds a Master's degree and excels in roles requiring Satvika-Abhinaya and Vidooshaka roles. He is academically active, works as a guest lecturer, and founded Rangadhwani to promote Kutiyattam. His awards include the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademy Award and Junior Fellowship from the Ministry of Culture.

Abheeshta Nath J R is an academic with a passion for theatre and performing arts. She has performed Nangiarkuthu at prestigious venues and won national Kalaripayattu championships. She also has a special interest in Baul music.

Narayanan has toured Kutiyattam troupes globally, organized cultural events, and writes articles on Kerala's performing arts.

He writes on cinema and mysticism, has worked on film and theatre, and currently explores ancient Chinese philosophy, particularly Taoism and its link to Samkhya.

Her methodology combines ethnography, experimental writing, dance arts, design practices, critical theory, and storytelling. It emphasizes how multisensory approaches can inform accessible cultural heritage practices and arts for all, through both live and virtual platforms. This approach aims to expand capacities to listen to each other and to the earth. Dr. Kochhar was a Fulbright-Nehru Senior Scholar Awardee in 2022–2023 and 2017–2018.

The Body Remembers the Mountain Project (BRM, 2023) is an archival, ethnographical, and critical performance study of Kailasodharanham (Lifting Mount Kailash) that examines how the performing body of Kutiyattam engages with the questions of eco-aesthetics. This research, which included a study of Kerala stories about mountains and their communities, resulted In the Blue Houses Dream the Mountains, a live/virtual intercultural bi-lingual theatre work on mountains and climate change and what we were told was the first ever Accessible Theatre Production for live theatre work in Kerala, with interpretation in Indian Sign Language and audio description in Malayalam. This project formed part of Dr. Kanta Kochhar-Lindgren’s Fulbright-Nehru Senior Scholar Research Project (April-December 2023).

Kalamandalam Rama Chakyar, from a three-generation Kutiyattam lineage, began training at age nine and later joined Kerala Kalamandalam. He is a renowned exponent, performing all significant roles in Kutiyattam and Chakyar Koothu nationally and internationally since 1970. He has held numerous academic roles and received prestigious awards, including the Central Sangeet Natak Academy Award in 2010.

Kalamandalam Jishnu Prathap is a notable young Kutiyattam artist and a disciple of maestros like Kalamandalam Ramachakyar. He holds a Master's degree and excels in roles requiring Satvika-Abhinaya and Vidooshaka roles. He is academically active, works as a guest lecturer, and founded Rangadhwani to promote Kutiyattam. His awards include the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademy Award and Junior Fellowship from the Ministry of Culture.

She has performed Nangiarkuthu at prestigious venues and won national Kalaripayattu championships. She also has a special interest in Baul music.

Rohit Xavier, a versatile theatre professional from Kerala and Pondicherry, holds a B.A. in Theatre Arts and is pursuing an M.A. in Performing Arts. K. R. Narayanan Chakkiar, a writer and patron of Kerala performing arts, holds a chemistry degree and spent four decades in pharmaceutical marketing. Narayanan has toured Kutiyattam troupes globally, organized cultural events, and writes articles on Kerala's performing arts.

He writes on cinema and mysticism, has worked on film and theatre, and currently explores ancient Chinese philosophy, particularly Taoism and its link to Samkhya.
