*The video shows black granite rocks of different shapes but similar sizes flying across swiftly before coming together as one. Gathered rocks again separate from each other to disintegrate, liquefy, granularize, or disappear into green glitching lines. Three figures of different metamorphosed earthish human bodies appear slowly over the background of glitching lines. Then proceeds to a further overlay of visuals of performers’ movements.
Intercultural Performance Project
In the Blue Houses Dream the Mountains
In the Blue Houses Dream the Mountains is an experimental and inter-cultural performance about the beauty and fragility of our mountains while shedding light on the pressing challenges of climate change.
This production, part of The Body Remembers the Mountains Project, is designed as a geo-meditation that tracks the story of a walker and his journey to collect mountain stories from across India and the US before it is too late. This work merges the form and kinesthetics of four distinct art forms: Contemporary Dance, Kutiyattam, Poothan Thira, and Kalaripayattu in order to share the transformative power of mountain stories. In the Blue Houses Dream the Mountains, is an accessible theater that provides a multisensory experience. It includes Audio Description in Malayalam for Blind/VI audience members and Indian Sign Language Interpretation for Deaf/Hard-of-Hearing audience members.
The scenography ponders on the scope of eco-aesthetics as it works to reinvoke practices blending art and ecology across cultures. This approach involves a study of the visual, material and performative rhythms of the performative sections. It also includes choosing mostly sustainable materials like bamboo and handmade paper from mulberry bushes and other natural materials.
This work is written, choreographed, and directed by Dr. Kanta Ann Kochhar
